Prime Minister Modi to Survey Landslide-Ravaged Wayanad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the landslide-affected areas of Wayanad, Kerala on Saturday to assess the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts and meet with survivors.

A government official disclosed that the Prime Minister’s itinerary includes arriving in Kannur around 11 AM, followed by an aerial survey of the disaster-stricken regions in Wayanad. Modi is expected to reach the landslide-hit area by 12:15 PM, where he will receive a comprehensive briefing from rescue teams about the evacuation operations and monitor the current rehabilitation work.

The Prime Minister’s visit will also encompass stops at a relief camp and hospital, providing him the opportunity to engage directly with victims and survivors of the catastrophe. Following these on-site visits, Modi will preside over a review meeting to obtain a detailed report on the incident and the status of relief efforts.

Devastating Toll: Hundreds Lost, Many Still Missing

The devastating landslides that struck on July 30 have resulted in a staggering death toll exceeding 300, with hundreds more sustaining injuries. The Indian Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), in collaboration with local emergency services, continue their extensive search and rescue mission, with teams now concentrating on the densely forested areas.

In a bid to expedite the search for those still unaccounted for, the Kerala government has enlisted the assistance of missing persons’ families and local community members.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, addressed Parliament on Wednesday, advocating for increased compensation and a comprehensive rehabilitation package for those affected by the Wayanad landslide. Gandhi urged the government to designate the recent calamity in Wayanad as a “national disaster,” emphasizing the need for heightened support and resources.
